110v Plasma Cutters FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing and using 110 volt plasma cutters.

Will a 110 volt plasma cutter cut as thickly as a 230 volt one?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Generally not. Power is voltage multiplied by current, and a 110 V connection can carry less current before the plug, cable or circuit is overloaded. That limits the output a machine can safely draw.

Expect a 110 V machine to handle thinner and lighter work than a larger machine on a higher voltage. Check the maker's stated cut ratings for the voltage you will actually use, because many dual-voltage machines give a lower rating on 110 V.

What does dual voltage mean and how does it work?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A dual-voltage plasma cutter can run on either 110 V or 230 V. Depending on the design, it may detect the voltage automatically or need you to change a plug, link or setting.

Output is usually lower on 110 V than on 230 V, so read the rating plate and manual to see what you get on each. Always check the machine is set up correctly for the supply you are connecting before you switch on.

Why does my cutter trip the supply or cut out on a site transformer?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The usual causes are an undersized transformer, a long or thin extension lead, or a circuit shared with other tools. Plasma cutters draw a heavy current while cutting, and a voltage drop on a long lead makes the problem worse.

Use the shortest, heaviest-gauge lead you can, plug the cutter in on its own, and make sure the transformer is rated for the machine's input current. Fault-protection devices that trip repeatedly are doing their job, so find the cause rather than bypassing them.

Do I still need a compressor with a 110 volt plasma cutter?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Plasma cutters need clean, dry compressed air at the pressure and flow the manufacturer specifies. Some portable machines have a built-in compressor, which helps on site where an air line is not to hand.

If yours needs external air, a small workshop compressor may be enough for light work, but check its output against the machine's air requirement. Wet or oily air shortens consumable life and spoils cut quality, so a filter or moisture trap is worthwhile.
