415v Arc Welders FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing and using a three phase arc welder.

Do I need a three phase supply to run one?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Yes, normally. These machines need a three phase supply of the right voltage and capacity. Many industrial units have it but most homes and small premises do not.

Some machines can be connected to a suitable three phase generator, and some multi-voltage models accept a range of supplies. Always check the data plate and manual for the voltage range, current draw and fuse rating, and have connection to the supply made by a qualified electrician.

How do I check my three phase supply is suitable?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Look at the welder's input current and recommended fuse or breaker rating on the data plate, then check that your supply, cable and protection can provide it. Your electrician can confirm the spare capacity of the supply and the correct plug or isolator.

A supply that is too weak causes voltage dips, nuisance tripping and an unstable arc, and cable that is too small can overheat. Do not change the rating of protective devices to get around a problem.

What is the difference between 400 volt and 415 volt on a welder?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

In the UK, three phase supplies are commonly described as either 400 or 415 volts, which is essentially the same nominal supply described in different ways. Welders are designed to tolerate the normal variation in supply voltage.

What matters more is that the machine is designed for the supply voltage range you have. Check the data plate, and if the machine lists a range or multiple voltages, follow the maker's instructions for configuring it.

Why does the duty cycle matter more on heavy work?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Duty cycle is the portion of a ten minute period a welder can run at a given current. Heavy welding at high current for long periods is hard on any machine, and running past its duty cycle triggers the thermal cut-out.

Choose a machine whose duty cycle at your normal working current comfortably covers the length of your welds. Machines with a higher rating at the current you use stay cooler and last longer.
