    110v Arc Welders FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing and using a 110 volt arc welder.

Why are 110 volt arc welders used on sites?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

On many construction and industrial sites, portable electrical equipment is required to run from a reduced 110 volt supply, because it lowers the risk of a serious shock if a cable or tool is damaged. A welder that runs from 110 volts can be connected to the site supply or to a suitable generator.

Check your site rules, because requirements vary, and follow the instructions of the person in charge of site electrical safety.

What is a dual voltage welder and how does it work?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A dual voltage or multi-voltage welder detects or is set to accept either a 110 volt or a 230 volt supply, so one machine works on site and in the workshop. Many are inverters that adjust internally.

The welding current you can use is normally lower on the lower voltage, so read the data plate and manual for the output at each input. Always use the correct plug and supply for the voltage in use, and never try to fit a different plug that does not match the supply rating.

What size electrodes can I use on a 110 volt welder?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

This depends on the machine's output when run on 110 volts. Smaller electrodes need less current and suit these welders best, and thicker electrodes need more current than a 110 volt machine may be able to provide.

Check the maker's guidance for the electrode sizes the machine can run at its 110 volt output. If you try to use an electrode that needs more current than the machine can supply, the arc becomes weak, difficult to strike and prone to sticking.

What supply and plug does a 110 volt arc welder need?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Site 110 volt equipment normally uses a yellow industrial plug and socket, usually at a particular current rating. The supply must be able to provide the current the welder draws, and the plug and cable must be rated for it.

A welder drawing more current than the supply or plug is rated for will trip protective devices or overheat the cable. Check the current draw on the welder's data plate and make sure the supply, transformer or generator can provide it.
