    PATON MIG Welders FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing multi-process and modular MIG welders.

What is a modular MIG system?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A modular system has a separate power source and wire feeder, sometimes with an optional cooling unit, linked by cables. You can choose each part to suit the job and add or replace parts later.

It works well for larger fabrications as the feeder can be moved close to the work. A compact machine is simpler if you rarely move away from the power source.

Is a compact machine enough for my workshop?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A compact machine has the feeder built in and is quick to set up. It suits most light to medium fabrication, repair and maintenance.

If you need to reach a long way from the machine, weld heavy sections for long periods, or want to expand the system, a modular machine may suit you better.

What wire and gas should I use?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

For steel, solid wire with an argon and carbon dioxide mix is typical. Stainless steel needs its own wire and an argon-based gas. Aluminium needs aluminium wire with pure argon, plus suitable liner and contact tips.

Flux-cored wire is an option for steel outdoors or where you want less preparation. Check your machine supports the wire you choose.

    When should I choose a water-cooled model?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Water cooling suits sustained high-current welding, where an air-cooled torch would overheat. It needs a cooling unit and some care of coolant levels and hoses.

For intermittent welding at moderate current, air-cooled is lighter and simpler.
