    Kemppi Air Fed Parts FAQs

Spares for powered and air-fed welding helmet systems, and how to work out the right part for your set-up.

What should I check on an air-fed helmet system before each shift?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Check the whole system before every use. HSE guidance says employers should confirm RPE is working before each use, and a powered system needs a quick look at the battery condition and the airflow indicator or low-flow warning, as set out in the maker's instructions.

Also look at the filter and spark guard (fitted, clean, undamaged), the breathing tube (no cuts, kinks or loose ends), the face seal and headband, and the cover lens. If the airflow warning sounds, the battery is weak or anything is damaged, stop and fix it before welding. Do not rely on a system that is not giving its full airflow.

How often should an air-fed helmet system be examined, and what records are kept?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The maker's instructions set the examination and replacement periods, including any shelf lives for parts such as filters. HSE guidance says reusable powered RPE should have a thorough examination and, where appropriate, testing at least monthly, or every three months if it is used only occasionally, carried out by a competent person following the maker's instructions.

This normally includes a visual check, battery condition and airflow. Keep records of examinations, tests and repairs for at least five years. Where parts need replacing, they should ideally come from the original maker. Your employer's risk assessment decides anything beyond these minimum checks.

How do I work out which spare part fits my air-fed system?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Start with the data plate, the instruction manual and the part number printed or moulded on the old part. Air-fed systems are made up of separate items (helmet shell, face seal, headband, filter, breathing tube, flow unit, battery, belt), and each maker designs them to work as a set.

Write down the system name or type, the marking on the part and any version or year shown. If the number is worn off, a photo of the part and the unit data plate usually lets our team help you match it. Avoid guessing from appearance alone, as parts can look alike but differ in fit or performance.

Can I mix parts from different makers or different system ranges?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

It is best not to. Powered and air-fed systems are approved and tested as complete assemblies, and the protection level depends on that whole combination of helmet, tube, filter and power unit working together. Swapping a filter, tube or seal for one from another range can change airflow or fit and may invalidate the approval.

HSE guidance advises that replacement parts should preferably come from the original maker so the equipment keeps its stated performance. Check the manual to see which parts are approved for your system, and ask the maker or supplier if the instructions do not say.
