Bohler Air Fed Helmets FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing a welding or grinding helmet that comes with a powered air system.

Is it better to buy a helmet and blower as a package or separately?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A package is the simplest route because the helmet, blower, breathing tube, filters and battery are chosen to work together. You know the airflow, the connections and the protection level match, and you have one set of instructions.

Buying separately can make sense when you already own part of a system, but you must confirm that the parts are approved to be used together. Mixing parts that were not tested as a system can reduce protection.

What is the difference between a welding helmet and a grinding visor with air feed?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A welding helmet has a filter that darkens to protect your eyes from arc light. Some systems also have a grinding setting or a clear visor for preparation work, where there is no arc. How this works differs between helmets, so read the manual for yours.

Never look at an arc through a clear visor, and do not treat a lightened filter as arc protection. Check that any grinding visor or mode on your helmet is approved for that use, and wear the extra eye and face protection the manual calls for.

How big a viewing area do I need?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A larger viewing area gives a better view of the joint and your surroundings, and it can reduce neck strain because you move your head less. It is especially useful for position work, large fabrications and grinding.

The trade-off is weight and bulk, so try the helmet for comfort and balance. A wide view is not a substitute for a good light and a clean lens.

What shade range should the auto-darkening filter cover?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The filter should cover the shades needed for your processes and current levels, with a light state that lets you see clearly before striking the arc. Lower shades are used for low-current work and grinding mode, higher shades for heavy current.

A wider range with a variable control is more flexible if you do mixed work. Check the shade guidance in the instructions and the standard for your process rather than guessing.
