    Helmet Spares FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing and replacing spare parts for welding helmets.

Can I use replacement parts that are not from the helmet maker?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Sometimes compatible parts fit, but you need to be careful. Parts supplied for a helmet by its maker are designed and tested for it, while other parts can differ in fit, optical quality and protection.

A poorly fitting lens or cover can let in light, spatter or radiation, and fitting parts the maker does not approve may affect the approval of the helmet. Check the manual for your own helmet to see which parts it allows, and make sure any replacement is stated to suit your model and to meet the same protection requirements.

How do I know when an auto-darkening filter needs replacing?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Signs of trouble include the filter failing to darken, darkening slowly, flickering or showing uneven shading or dark patches. A cracked or scratched filter, or one with spots in the display, should also be replaced.

First check the simple causes: a dirty or spattered cover lens, a flat or badly fitted battery, a sensor blocked by dirt, and the wrong setting. If a filter still misbehaves, stop using it, because a filter that does not darken can cause serious eye damage. Do not try to repair filters yourself.

Do auto-darkening filters need batteries, and how do I change them?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Many filters use solar cells plus a battery, which may be a replaceable button cell or a sealed unit. Some run only from the battery, and others have a charge indicator. If the display dims, the response slows or the filter will not switch on, check the battery first.

Follow the maker's instructions to replace it, and use the correct type. Sealed batteries cannot be changed by the user. Some filters have a test button to check operation, and it is good practice to test before every shift.

When should I replace the headband and sweatband?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Replace the headband when the adjustment ratchet slips, the plastic is cracked or the helmet no longer sits firmly on your head. A helmet that wobbles or tips forward is tiring and may move at the wrong moment.

Sweatbands soak up sweat and dirt, then harden and become unhygienic, so replace them regularly, especially in hot conditions. Many are sold in packs. A fresh headband and sweatband can make an old helmet feel like new.
