    Fronius TTG1600 TIG Torches FAQs

Answers on choosing, setting up and looking after a gas-cooled manual TIG torch in the lower amperage class.

What does the amp rating on a gas-cooled TIG torch really tell me?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The rating is the current the torch can carry at a stated duty cycle, which is the share of a 10-minute period it can weld at that output without overheating. A rating on its own is not the whole story: a torch used above its rating heats up faster, and the usable duty cycle drops.

Check the data plate or manual for the rating and the duty cycle it applies to, and whether separate figures are given for DC and AC. Choose a torch comfortably above the current you normally weld at, not one that only just matches it.

When do I need a torch with a gas valve in the handle?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A valved torch lets you switch the shielding gas on and off at the handle. It is mainly needed when the welding machine has no gas solenoid of its own to control the flow. Without a solenoid, gas would run continuously from the regulator.

If your machine already controls the gas, a standard torch without a valve is the usual match. Check your machine manual to see whether it switches the gas, and tell us the machine type if you want help matching a torch to it.

Should I choose a torch with current control in the handle or use a foot control?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Both are widely used. A foot control keeps both hands free and many welders find it natural for easing current up and down. A control in the torch handle suits work where a foot pedal is awkward, for example standing, positioning around a large part or working on site, and is often preferred for that reason.

Check that your machine supports a torch-mounted control and that the torch connections match the machine, as not all combinations are compatible. The machine manual will show which remote control options it accepts.

Does a longer torch lead make a difference?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A longer lead gives more reach from the machine, so you can work further from it without moving the equipment. The trade-offs are usually more weight and bulk to manage, and more cable to keep tidy so it does not kink or get trodden on.

A shorter lead is generally lighter and easier to handle where you are close to the machine. Choose the length that matches how far you actually work from the machine, and keep any remote control leads and the gas hose in mind, as they may need to reach as well. Check the maker's data for any model-specific limits.
