Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing a MIG welder that runs from a normal single-phase supply.
They suit workshops, garages, farms, mobile engineers and light fabrication where a standard single-phase supply is all you have. Modern inverter designs draw relatively little current for their output, so many can run from a normal socket or a suitable dedicated circuit. They are popular for both industrial and home use, and cover a wide range of work from thin sheet to moderate thickness.
Some smaller machines can, but many need a dedicated circuit with suitable protection, and some larger single-phase machines need a heavier supply than a normal domestic socket gives. Check the machine's input current and the supply and fuse or breaker rating it requires.Have a qualified electrician check the supply if you are unsure. Running a machine beyond what the circuit can supply causes tripping and can be dangerous.
A little extra capacity is often worthwhile, because a machine working well within its rating runs cooler, copes better with longer welds and gives room to grow. Very large machines use more power, are heavier and may need a stronger supply.Think about the thickest material you will weld and how continuously you will weld.
Duty cycle is the proportion of a ten-minute period a machine can weld at a given current before it must cool. Machines usually have a much higher duty cycle at lower current. If you weld for long periods at high current, choose a machine with a suitable rating. If the machine overheats, a thermal cut-out stops it until it cools.
