The new Duramax Hyamp torch range is impact-resistant and designed for high heat to withstand industrial use and harsh environments. Electrode end-of-life detection in the power supply combines with long consumable life to reduce operating costs.

Although designed for the Powermax125, these torches are also compatible with the Powermax105, 85, and 65 systems.

    Hypertherm Machine Torches FAQs

Practical answers on fitting, setting up and looking after a plasma machine torch on a cutting table, positioner or automated system.

How does torch height control keep the cut consistent?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Arc voltage rises as the torch moves away from the plate and falls as it gets closer. A torch height control reads that voltage while cutting, compares it with a target set from the cut chart, and raises or lowers the torch to hold the distance steady. This lets the torch follow warped or uneven plate.

The voltage reading also shifts as the electrode and nozzle wear, so a worn set can leave the torch sitting at the wrong height. If cut quality drifts, check the consumables and the actual cut height as well as the voltage setting.

Why are my parts bevelled or not square?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Too much bevel usually points to the torch settings or the torch itself. A top that is narrower than the bottom is commonly linked to a worn nozzle, too high a standoff, too little current or too much speed. Undercutting, where the bottom is narrower, is linked to too low a standoff, too much current or too low a speed.

A bevel that changes from positive to negative on the same part often means a failed nozzle, a torch that is out of square to the plate, or misaligned parts inside the torch. Check the consumables first, then the squareness of the torch, then the cutting parameters against the cut chart.

What causes dross on the bottom edge of machine-cut parts?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Dross is usually down to three things: cutting speed, current and standoff. Cutting too slowly, with too much current or too low a standoff, tends to give thick, rounded low-speed dross. Cutting too fast, with too little current or too high a standoff, tends to leave a small hard bead along the bottom edge.

A worn nozzle is a frequent cause of dross and top spatter, so look at the nozzle first. Then change one setting at a time in small steps and compare the edge. Always work from the cut chart for your material, thickness and consumables.

Does compressed air quality really matter for a machine torch?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Yes. Moisture, oil and dirt in the air supply shorten consumable life, reduce cut quality and can harm the torch and the power supply. Condensation can form in long pipe runs, and oil from other lubricated air tools on the same line can travel back into the supply.

A moisture and particle filter close to the plasma power supply's air inlet is commonly recommended on top of the workshop's own air treatment. Drain and service filters regularly, and follow the manufacturer's air quality requirements in the manual. Sudden drops in consumable life are often an air supply problem.
