    110v Plasma Cutters FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing and using 110 volt plasma cutters.

    Why would I choose a 110 volt plasma cutter?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Many UK building sites, shipyards and other controlled workplaces require portable tools to run from a reduced-voltage 110 V supply for electrical safety. A plasma cutter that runs on 110 V lets you cut on those sites without needing a different power arrangement.

It also suits mobile work, because a 110 V site transformer or generator is often the only power on hand away from the workshop.

What does dual voltage mean and how does it work?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A dual-voltage plasma cutter can run on either 110 V or 230 V. Depending on the design, it may detect the voltage automatically or need you to change a plug, link or setting.

Output is usually lower on 110 V than on 230 V, so read the rating plate and manual to see what you get on each. Always check the machine is set up correctly for the supply you are connecting before you switch on.

    Can I run a 110 volt plasma cutter from a generator?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Often yes, but it depends on the generator. It needs enough continuous power for the machine's input rating, a stable output voltage, and a type of output the manufacturer says is suitable for welding or cutting equipment.

A generator that is too small can cause the cutter to cut out, struggle to start the arc or run poorly. Check the input power or current on the machine's data plate and compare it with the generator's rated output, allowing some margin. If unsure, ask the maker or our team.

Why does my cutter trip the supply or cut out on a site transformer?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The usual causes are an undersized transformer, a long or thin extension lead, or a circuit shared with other tools. Plasma cutters draw a heavy current while cutting, and a voltage drop on a long lead makes the problem worse.

Use the shortest, heaviest-gauge lead you can, plug the cutter in on its own, and make sure the transformer is rated for the machine's input current. Fault-protection devices that trip repeatedly are doing their job, so find the cause rather than bypassing them.
