    Lincoln Speedtec Compact FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing and using a compact single phase multi-process welder.

    What is a compact multi-process welder?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

It is a single unit that combines the power source and wire feeder, and can run more than one process. Usually that means MIG, stick (MMA) and often DC TIG, which is why some are described as 5 in 1 or similar. The exact processes depend on the model, so check the specification.

They suit garages, farms, maintenance work and small workshops, where one machine needs to cover several jobs.

What thickness of metal can I weld?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

It depends on the machine's maximum current, the process and the supply. As a general guide, compact machines are well suited to sheet and light to medium fabrication, with thicker material needing multiple passes or a bigger machine.

Check the maker's guidance for the thickness range on the supply you have, because a machine running from a reduced supply gives less output than one on a full supply.

Do I need gas, or can I use gasless wire?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

You can use either. Solid wire needs shielding gas, normally an argon and carbon dioxide mixture for steel. Gasless (self-shielded flux-cored) wire needs no cylinder, which is convenient for outdoor work and quick repairs, but it makes more smoke and slag, and the weld usually needs cleaning.

The polarity differs between the two, so follow the instructions and check the lead arrangement or setting.

How do I use stick welding mode?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Fit the electrode holder and work clamp, choose an electrode that suits the metal and joint, and set the current to the electrode maker's guidance. Strike the arc, keep a steady arc length and travel at a steady pace.

Electrodes should be kept dry and stored as the maker advises. Stick welding is forgiving of rust, paint and wind, so it is a good choice for site repairs.
