Powermax Cartridge Machine Torch Parts FAQs

Practical answers on choosing, fitting and getting the best life from the all-in-one cartridges used in machine-mounted plasma cutting torches.

How do I know when a cartridge needs replacing?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Replace it when cut quality starts to fall, which is usually well before it fails. Maker guidance links a worn cartridge to rougher edges, more dross, a wider kerf, bevelled cuts and slower cutting. Look at the nozzle opening in the cartridge: if it is notched or egg-shaped, or the outer shield or retaining cap is badly worn or damaged, replace the cartridge. Some systems also stop the arc and show a warning when they detect that the cartridge has reached end of life.

That warning is a safeguard, not a target. A cartridge that fails on the torch can damage the torch itself.

Why must I use a gouging cartridge only in gouge mode and a cutting cartridge in cut mode?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The two are designed differently. A cutting cartridge produces a narrow, focused arc to sever metal, while a gouging cartridge shapes the arc to remove metal and wash out welds and defects. Maker troubleshooting guidance for poor cut quality specifically says to use a gouging cartridge in gouge mode and a cutting cartridge in cut mode.

Using the wrong pairing gives poor results and can shorten cartridge life. Gouging cartridges also come in lighter and heavier removal profiles, so choose the one that suits the job and check the parts guide for your torch.

    How do I change a cartridge safely?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Switch the power supply off first, which is the preferred method. If you cannot, set the torch lock to its locked position and check that the torch does not fire when the trigger is pulled. Maker instructions warn that arc ignition on an instant-start torch is immediate, which can cause burns and injury.

Let the torch cool before handling hot parts. Fit the correct cartridge and tighten it as the manual describes, which on many torches is a quarter turn, and make sure it is neither too loose nor too tight. Then return the torch lock to the ready position as directed in the manual.

What causes a bevelled edge or dross on the cut?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Both usually come from the setup rather than the metal alone. A positive bevel, where the top edge is narrower, is linked by the maker to a worn nozzle, too high a standoff, too little current or too fast a travel speed. A negative bevel points to too low a standoff, too much current or too slow a speed.

Dross on the bottom edge is linked to travel speed being wrong in either direction, plus standoff and current. Worn consumables are a common contributor, so check the cartridge first, then adjust speed in small steps, and start from the maker's cut chart.
