Straight answers to the questions people ask when choosing and fitting replacement consumables and spare parts for a plasma torch.

What are the main consumable parts in a plasma torch and what does each do?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The electrode carries the current to the arc and is its starting point. The nozzle focuses the arc and gas through a small central orifice. The swirl ring spins the gas around the electrode to centre the arc and help cool the nozzle. The retaining cap holds the parts together, and the shield protects the torch from sparks and molten metal.

The nozzle and electrode wear fastest and are normally changed together. Your torch manual shows exactly which parts your torch uses.

How can I tell when the nozzle and electrode are worn out?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The usual first sign is poorer cut quality: a wider cut, more dross on the underside, rough edges or hard starting. Then look at the parts. Maker guidance says to replace a nozzle that shows erosion, missing material, blocked gas holes or an off-round or enlarged centre hole, and a worn orifice is one of the first things to check when dross appears.

When the electrode itself is worn, the maker advises replacing the electrode and nozzle together. Your manual gives the wear limits for your torch.

Do I need to replace the swirl ring as often as the nozzle and electrode?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Usually not. The swirl ring is not worn by the arc in the same way, so it often lasts through several nozzle and electrode changes. Inspect it each time you change parts, and clear dirt from its gas holes with clean, dry air.

Maker guidance says to replace a swirl ring that is chipped, cracked, has blocked gas holes or has damaged O-rings. Poor gas swirl affects cut quality, so do not keep using a damaged one. The replacement interval depends on the torch and how it is used, so follow your manual.

Why is my cut quality poor even with new consumables?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Consumables are only one cause. The makers' troubleshooting guides point first to travel speed: too slow leaves thick dross along the bottom edge, while too fast leaves a small hard bead. Torch standoff height that is too high or too low and a cutting current that is wrong for the nozzle also cause dross.

Adjust one setting at a time in small steps, using the cut chart in your manual. Also check that the parts are the right set for the current and are fitted correctly, and that your air supply is clean and dry.
