All Hypertherm Machine Systems FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing a plasma cutting system for mechanised and automated use.

What is a machine plasma system and what is it for?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A machine system uses a straight, mechanised torch mounted on a cutting table, a motion carriage, a bevel head or a robot, instead of being held in the hand. It is used for repeatable, accurate cutting of shapes and profiles from sheet and plate.

On smaller systems the power source is the same kind of air plasma unit as a hand system, while larger high-definition systems use other gases such as oxygen. The torch, the interfaces and the way it is controlled are set up for automation. Many machine systems also come with a hand torch for occasional manual work.

How do I choose the size of machine system for my cutting table?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Choose by the thickest material you cut regularly at a good quality, using the recommended cut rating rather than the maximum severance figure. Production work needs a little spare capacity so the machine is not running at its limit all day.

Also consider the cutting speed you need, the pierce capability for starting cuts mid-plate, and whether the table and controller can use the power source you choose.

What interface does the plasma system need to talk to my CNC controller?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Machine plasma systems normally have an interface for the cutting table controller, so that the controller can start the arc and receive signals back such as arc transfer. Some systems provide extra options, such as a digital or serial link for control and diagnostics, or an arc voltage signal for a torch height controller. What is provided, and the cables and connectors needed, vary from one system to another.

Check what your controller and height control require, and compare it with the interface described in the manual for the system you are considering. If you are unsure, our team can help you match the pieces.

Why does arc voltage and torch height control matter?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The distance between the torch and the plate, known as stand-off height, has a big effect on cut quality, edge angle and consumable life. As plate warps and the table moves, the height needs to be adjusted automatically.

A height controller does this by reading the arc voltage and moving the torch up or down. It needs a reliable voltage signal from the plasma system, so check that your system supports the interface you plan to use.

Which torch length should I choose for a machine system?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The torch lead needs to be long enough to reach the whole travel of the gantry or carriage without being stretched, snagged or pulled tight. A lead that is too short limits movement and wears quickly, while a very long one adds clutter.

Choose according to the table size and the position of the power source. Allow for a drag chain or support where the torch moves a long way.

Can I use a machine torch by hand?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A machine torch is designed to be mounted on a cutting table, carriage or robot, not held in the hand. It usually has no handle or trigger designed for hand use, and holding one close to the arc can leave you exposed to light, sparks and hot metal.

If you also need to cut by hand, choose a system that comes with a hand torch, or a separate hand torch intended for the purpose, and follow the maker's instructions for your own system. Never modify a machine torch for hand use.
