3M Speedglas have been conducting extensive research into designing a welding helmet that is constructed to be reliable and extremely adaptable to a welder’s needs and situation. The result of their research is the G5-01 Welding Helmet. Built for heavy-duty, high-amperage welding and grinding, the G5-01 Welding Helmet connects to the 3M Adflo Powered Air Respirator to deliver TH3-rated protection. This package comes without the welding filters designed for this helmet and with the 3M Speedglas G5-01 Consumable Starter Kit.

The G5-01 clear protective visor dimensions are 104 x 170mm, offering a massive range of viewing ability, plus its curves provide excellent views up, down and superficially. The model’s slim profile and ergonomic design make the G5-01 more lightweight and easier to squeeze into the tightest spaces whilst also retaining its comfort. Mould the helmet to suit your individual needs with 3M branded additional accessories such as different types of protection covers.

Built for heavy-duty, high-amperage welding and grinding, this innovative series of welding helmets are constructed to offer welders more control over their airflow direction. The design of the helmet allows the airflow to be directed to your face, your visor or a combination of both, whatever the welder prefers. All adjustments made to the airflow are possible whilst wearing the helmet. The helmet’s flip-up function allows an effortless switch between welding and grinding applications whilst also staying protected due to the powered air respiratory system.

The Turbo unit draws air through a spark arrester, pre-filter and particle filter (and gas filter when used) to reduce respiratory hazards. It then feeds the air, via the breathing tube, into the welding shield. The constant flow of filtered air and the comfortable face seal keep contaminated air outside the shield.

The new Adflo unit features Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries, which are more than 40% lighter than the NiMH batteries used in the original model. The lighter battery has the same lifetime as its predecessor and benefits from a faster partial charge time. This product comes included with the G5-01 Consumable Starter Kit. This item was designed as a collection piece containing the necessities needed to achieve maximum protection whilst using the G5-01 series helmets. This package includes sweatbands made of three different materials, inner cover plates and outer protection plates, a replacement clear visor plate, one breathing tube cover and a replacement face seal.

    Speedglas G5-01 Adflo Parts FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing and looking after spare parts for a heavy-duty powered air welding helmet.

How do I find the right spare for my heavy-duty welding helmet?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Check the model marking on the helmet and the filter, then compare it with the parts list in the user manual. Heavy-duty helmets are often sold in several versions, with different filters, head protectors and air ducts, so what fits one may not fit another.

If an old part is still in place, note any number printed on it and compare it side by side with the replacement. Where you are unsure, our team can help you match the part to the helmet before you order.

What are the different head and neck protectors, and which should I choose?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The head and neck protector covers the areas around the helmet shell and stops arc light, spatter and fume reaching your skin. They come in fabric, flame-retardant fabric and leather, in different sizes.

Leather tends to last longest in heavy spatter and overhead welding, while fabric is lighter and cooler. Pick the one that matches the heat and spatter at your workplace, and make sure the size gives full coverage without pulling on the helmet.

How do I choose between sweatband types?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Towelling and fleece-type bands absorb sweat well and feel soft but wear quickly and need replacing often. Leather bands last longer and are easier to wipe clean, but they feel firmer and can be warmer.

Whichever you prefer, replace the band when it is hard, stained or no longer comfortable. A fresh band also keeps sweat from running into the headband mechanism and the helmet interior.

What do the magnifying lenses do and how do I pick the strength?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A magnifying lens fits behind the welding filter and makes fine detail easier to see, which is helpful for close TIG work or when your eyesight needs a little help. The strength is measured in diopters, and a higher number gives more magnification.

Start with a lower strength and move up only if you need to. Too much magnification makes your working distance awkward, and anyone with a prescription should check with their optician first.
