230v Plasma Cutters

230v Plasma Cutters FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing and using single-phase 230 volt plasma cutters.

Who is a 230 volt plasma cutter best suited to?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Single-phase 230 V machines suit small workshops, garages, farms, maintenance teams and fabricators who have a normal mains connection but no three-phase supply. They are the most common way to get plasma cutting into a small premises.

They cover light to medium fabrication, bodywork, repair and general metal cutting. If you regularly cut thick plate or run all day, a larger three-phase machine is usually a better fit.

What size of socket and fuse do I need?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Check the machine's data plate for its input current, then make sure the circuit, socket, plug and fuse or breaker are rated to match. A standard 13 amp domestic socket is not suitable for every machine, and some need a dedicated higher-rated outlet.

If your machine needs more than a normal socket can give, have a qualified electrician install a suitable supply rather than modifying the plug or fuse. The manual states the recommended protection.

Why does my plasma cutter keep tripping the breaker?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Plasma cutters draw a large current, especially at start-up and when cutting at full output. A circuit that is too small, shared with other equipment, or fed through a long thin lead will trip.

Try the machine on a dedicated circuit with a short, appropriately rated lead, and avoid running other heavy loads at the same time. If it still trips, have the circuit and the machine checked rather than fitting a larger breaker than the wiring allows.

Is single-phase output enough for thicker steel?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

It depends on the machine's rating. Single-phase machines are limited by the current a normal circuit can supply, so their maximum cut thickness is lower than a larger three-phase machine of the same type.

Compare the recommended cut thickness, not just the severance figure, since the recommended figure is what gives a clean, practical cut. If you will often work near the top of a machine's limits, choose a more powerful machine.

Can I use a generator to power a 230 volt plasma cutter?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Often, yes, but the generator must be large enough for the machine's input rating and give a stable voltage. An undersized or poor-quality generator can cause the arc to cut out and may damage electronics.

Compare the machine's input power on its data plate with the generator's continuous rating, leave a margin, and check the generator maker confirms it is suitable for welding or cutting equipment.

What is the difference between a built-in compressor and an external air supply?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A built-in compressor makes the machine self-contained, which is handy for mobile work or where no air line exists. It is usually sized for light to medium cutting and may limit how continuously you can work.

A machine that uses external air relies on your workshop compressor, which can provide more air for longer, but you must make sure the pressure, flow and air quality meet the manufacturer's requirements.
