    110v TIG Welders FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing and using TIG welders for 110 volt site supplies.

    Why would I choose a 110v TIG welder?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

On many UK building sites, shipyards and industrial locations, 110 volt supplies from a centre-tapped transformer or generator are the preferred or specified way to power portable equipment, because they reduce the risk of electric shock in damp or rough conditions. A TIG welder made to run on 110 volts lets you work to those site rules without extra equipment.

Many of these machines are portable inverters, light enough to carry. Some are multi-voltage machines that also run from 230 volts, which gives flexibility between site and workshop. Always check your site rules and the machine's data plate.

    Can I run a 110v TIG welder from a generator?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Often yes, if the generator is large enough and produces a clean, stable output. Inverter welders can be sensitive to poor quality power, so check the generator's output rating, waveform and regulation against the welder's requirements.

A generator that is too small will cause cutting out or damage. The welder manufacturer's guidance on generator size and type is the best guide, and a 110 volt transformer or centre-tapped output is often used on site. If unsure, ask before connecting.

Why is my machine cutting out or tripping?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

On a 110 volt supply, the current drawn is high, so supply and cable problems show up quickly. Common causes are an undersized or very long extension cable, an overloaded supply or transformer, a tripping breaker rated too low, or too many tools on the same circuit.

Use the shortest, heaviest extension lead that is suitable, make sure the supply can provide the needed current, and run the welder at a current the supply can sustain. If the machine has a thermal protection light, allow it to cool.

    Do I need a special extension cable?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Yes, use a cable properly rated for the current the welder draws, and keep it as short as practical. A thin or very long cable drops voltage, which reduces welding power and can make the machine cut out. Extension reels should be fully unwound, since coiled cable can overheat.

Use site-approved 110 volt cable and connectors in good condition. Check the manual for the recommended cable size, and have any doubtful equipment inspected before use.
