    ESAB Air Fed Parts FAQs

Filters, seals, hoses and spares for one maker's powered air welding helmets: what each type of part does and how to choose and look after it.

What do the TH1, TH2 and TH3 markings mean when choosing air-fed spares?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Powered helmets and hoods with a loose-fitting head top are covered by the European standard EN 12941. It sets performance classes TH1, TH2 and TH3, with a higher number meaning better filtering and less leakage into the head top. Each class can be used with particle, gas or combined filters.

When choosing a replacement filter or other part, match it to the class and combination named in the maker's manual and on the data plate. The protection depends on the whole assembly of helmet, hose, blower unit and filter, so do not mix and match without the maker's approval.

How do I know when to replace the particle filter on a powered air unit?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The right timing depends on the maker, the type of filter and how dusty or fumy the work is. The HSE says the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, including recommended replacement periods and shelf lives, should always be followed.

Typical signs a filter needs changing are shorter battery run time than before, a low-airflow alarm even with a charged battery, or damage. Heat, dust and spatter shorten life. Do not wash or tap out a particle filter unless the maker says that is allowed, and always fit the correct type for the unit.

How should I clean and store air-fed helmet parts?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The HSE says RPE should be stored according to the manufacturer's instructions, and that leaving it in dirty areas can contaminate the inside and deteriorate it through dirt, solvents and sunlight. HSE guidance adds that cleaning products other than those the maker recommends may cause problems.

In practice, clean parts as the manual describes, let them dry and keep them in a clean, dry place away from sunlight, heat and solvents. Keep spare filters in their sealed wrapping until needed.

What checks and records should I keep for a reusable powered helmet?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The HSE says RPE should be inspected thoroughly before each use and that, for reusable RPE, you should keep a record of regular examinations, maintenance, repairs and, where appropriate, testing. Checks usually include the seals, hose, helmet shell, filters, battery and airflow.

What counts as an adequate schedule depends on the equipment and the maker's instructions. HSE guidance explains who should carry out maintenance: trained, competent people. Report anything damaged and take it out of use until it is put right.
