CK17 TIG Torch Packages FAQs

Answers to common questions about complete air-cooled TIG torch packages: choosing the cooling, head type, cable length and connection, and using them safely.

Should I choose an air-cooled or a water-cooled TIG torch?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Air-cooled (gas-cooled) torches are simpler: there are no coolant hoses or cooler to look after, and they are easy to move around. They are popular for work up to about 200 amps, and for lighter, intermittent use. Water-cooled torches are generally used at higher currents, often from around 250 amps upwards, and for long, continuous welding.

The deciding factors are the current you actually weld at and for how long. Compare that with the torch's rated amperage and duty cycle, and remember the rating is only as good as the weakest link, so check your welding machine's output too. If you are close to the limit, the next size up is usually the safer choice.

What is the difference between a flexible-head and a rigid-head TIG torch?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A flexible (flex) head can be bent to set the angle that suits the joint, which helps in tight corners and awkward positions and can make long sessions more comfortable. A rigid head holds a fixed angle, which many welders find steadier and more repeatable for straightforward, repetitive welding.

Both types normally use the same consumables within a torch family, so the choice is mainly about access and personal preference. A flex head has a joint in the neck, so check it for wear and do not repeatedly bend it sharply to the same spot. If you mainly weld open joints on the bench, rigid is often perfectly adequate.

Does the length of the torch cable matter?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Yes, it is a trade-off. A longer lead gives you more reach from the machine without moving it, which is handy on large fabrications. A shorter lead is lighter, less awkward to manage and easier to keep tidy, so it is often more comfortable for bench work.

A very long lead can also drag, snag and kink more easily, and whatever the length you should keep the cable reasonably straight and free of tight loops while welding. Choose the shortest length that comfortably covers your work area, and check the cable is the type your torch and machine connection are designed for.

What does the machine connection on a TIG torch mean, and will it fit my welder?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The machine connection is the fitting at the end of the cable that joins the torch to your welding set. On many gas-cooled torches the combined power and gas hose ends in a threaded gas fitting, but welding machines vary in how they accept it. Many have a twist-lock power socket and a separate gas fitting, so an adaptor is often needed.

Before choosing, look at your machine's front panel and manual to see the socket type and the gas connection it uses. The adaptor must match the machine side as well as the torch side. If the fit is not clear, the maker of the machine can confirm what it accepts.
