    CK20 Accessories FAQs

Answers to common questions about torch switches, cable covers, adaptors, quick connectors and accessory kits for this style of TIG torch.

How do I know which accessory kit or part fits my TIG torch?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Start with the torch type and the model marking on the torch body, handle or data plate, then check the torch manual or parts list for the part you need. Accessory kits are usually sold against a list of torch families and a contents chart, so read the chart to see exactly which collets, cups and spares are included and what size they are.

Makers warn that fitting consumable parts from other makers, or fitting them in the wrong order, can damage the torch. If the part number is not clear, our team can help you match it to your torch.

Should I choose a torch switch or a foot control?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A torch switch is an on/off control, so the current is whatever you set on the machine. It suits tack welds, repetitive short welds and awkward positions where dragging a foot pedal around is a nuisance. A foot control (or a thumb or finger control on the torch) lets you vary current while you weld, which gives finer control of the weld pool and the end of the weld.

Check that the switch or remote you choose is compatible with your welding machine's control socket and wiring, and choose a cable long enough to reach comfortably without being pulled tight. The machine manual will say what is supported.

What does a leather cable cover do and when is it worth fitting?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A cable cover is a sleeve that wraps around the torch lead bundle (power cable, gas hose and, on water-cooled torches, the water hoses). It protects them from abrasion when dragged over rough surfaces and from sparks, slag and hot spatter from nearby work. Leather is commonly chosen where heat and spatter are a concern; woven nylon covers are lighter.

Measure the bundle first, because the inside diameter must suit the leads, and a hook-and-loop fastening makes it easy to fit and to remove for inspection. A cover is no substitute for checking the leads regularly: take it off now and then and look at what is underneath.

What are pre-flow and post-flow, and do my accessories affect them?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Pre-flow starts the shielding gas before the arc is struck, so the metal and tungsten are not exposed to air at the start. Post-flow keeps gas flowing after the arc stops, protecting the cooling weld and the hot tungsten. Welding guidance generally advises longer post-flow on stainless steel and titanium, which oxidise more readily.

Both are set on the welding machine, not on the torch, but accessories matter: a leaking connector, adaptor or hose can let air in and undo the protection. Longer tungsten stick-out also leaves more of the electrode exposed, so it generally calls for good coverage. Check your machine manual for the adjustable range and the material supplier's advice.
