    Gas Cutting Machines FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing and using gas cutting machines.

What types of gas cutting machine are there?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The common portable types are the straight-line carriage that runs along a track and cuts straight lines, often with the option of a bevel, and the pipe cutting machine that is driven round the pipe on a chain or band. Larger machines cut shapes and profiles under a numerical or optical control and can carry more than one torch.

For most workshops and sites a portable track machine is the starting point. Choose by what you cut most: plate, pipe or shapes.

What do I need to run a gas cutting machine?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

You need the machine and its track, a cutting torch that suits the machine, nozzles, regulators for oxygen and fuel gas, hoses with flashback protection, and an electrical supply for the motor. Machines are made for different voltages, and on UK sites 110 V is common for safety, so choose the right one for where you work.

Check that the torch fits the machine's holder and that the machine can carry its weight and the pull of the hoses. If you are unsure about compatibility, check the data plate and manual for your own machine and torch.

How do I set up for a straight cut?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Mark the cut line, then lay the track alongside it, parallel and in contact with the plate, and set the torch height and position so that the flame follows the line. Make sure the track is straight, clean and secure and cannot shift during the cut, and that the plate is flat and supported so the offcut cannot pinch or fall away unexpectedly.

Check that the torch is square to the plate, or at the angle you want for a bevel, and support the hoses so they do not pull the carriage off line. Run the machine without the flame first to check that it travels the whole length of the cut freely.

What safety precautions apply when machine cutting?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Machine cutting still gives off sparks, molten slag, intense heat, light and fume. Wear eye protection with the right filter, gloves, flame-resistant clothing and sturdy boots, and keep the area clear of anything flammable. Fit flashback arrestors, follow the safety procedures for gas cylinders and hoses, and keep a fire extinguisher close.

Although the machine moves by itself, stay with it while it is running and be ready to shut off the gases if it jams or the flame goes out. Keep cables out of the path of hot slag and use a residual current device on mains-powered equipment where your risk assessment requires. Ventilate well or use extraction when cutting galvanised or coated steel.
