Spares and add-ons for a powered air welding helmet system: how to pick the right part and when to change it.

How do I check a part is right for my powered air helmet system?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Start with the data plate or label on the blower unit and helmet, and the manual that came with the system. These give the system name and part references. If you still have the old part, look for a reference printed or moulded on it and match it exactly.

Helmet parts, blower parts and battery parts are usually different families, so say which one you are replacing. Be wary of mixing parts from another system, because filters, seals and connectors are normally designed to work together. If you are unsure, our team can help you check before you order.

How do I know when the main filter needs changing?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Follow the manual first, because change points depend on the maker, the filter and how dirty the work is. The HSE says filters should be changed when they are damaged or visibly contaminated, and replaced if breathing through them becomes noticeably harder. On a powered system, a low-flow alarm or warning light is often the sign of a clogged filter or a flat battery.

Do not wait for a fixed date if the filter looks dirty, wet or damaged. Keep a note of when you fit each filter so you can spot a pattern in your own work.

What does a spark protector do, and when should I replace it?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A spark protector is a screen that sits in front of the filter so that sparks and spatter do not burn into it or reach the blower. It is a wearing part: it takes the hits that would otherwise damage the filter.

Makers generally say to replace it if it is bent, burnt through, clogged or no longer seats properly, and not to run the system without it fitted. How often depends on the process, so look at it regularly rather than waiting for a set period. Always check the manual for the right type for your system.

Can I use a magnifying lens inside my helmet?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Many helmets have a clip-in or snap-in magnifying lens, sometimes called a reading or cheater lens, in set strengths. It is meant to let you see close work clearly without reading glasses, but only a lens made for your helmet will sit and seal properly.

Check the manual for which strengths and fitting method suit your helmet, and choose a strength that gives a clear view at your normal working distance. Do not fit a lens that does not seat firmly, and fit it only as the manual describes so the main viewing window and seals are not disturbed. If vision is poor, see an optician.
