    Hypertherm Consumables FAQs

Straightforward answers on choosing, fitting and replacing the consumable parts in a plasma cutting torch.

How do I make sure I order the right consumables for my plasma torch?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Start with the torch and power source rather than the part you can see. Consumables are normally specific to the torch type, the cutting current and whether the torch is a hand or machine version, so a part that looks the same may not fit or may not suit your current.

Check the data plate and the maker's manual, which normally lists every consumable by part number for each current setting. Compare the old part with the new one before fitting, and if you are unsure, our team can help you work it out from the torch details.

What do the electrode, nozzle, swirl ring, retaining cap and shield each do?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

The electrode carries the current and starts the arc. The nozzle squeezes the arc through a small orifice so it is narrow and hot enough to cut. The swirl ring spins the gas around the electrode so the arc stays centred and stable.

The retaining cap holds the inner parts in place, and the shield (or cap) protects the front of the torch from spatter and helps shape the gas around the cut. Each part wears in its own way, so a poor cut can point to any of them.

What is the difference between a hand shield and a machine shield?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A hand-cutting shield is designed for dragging the torch lightly along the plate or holding it at a short standoff. A machine (mechanised) shield is designed for a torch held at a fixed height on a table, track or robot.

Using the wrong one can make the torch ride at the wrong height or cut poorly, so match the shield to how you actually use the torch. Some parts are common to both versions of a torch and some are not, so confirm in the manual for your torch and current.

Do the retaining cap and swirl ring need replacing, and how often?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

They generally last much longer than the electrode and nozzle, but they are not permanent. Check them every time you change consumables. A retaining cap with cracks or damaged threads, or a swirl ring with blocked or damaged holes, should be replaced.

If fresh electrodes and nozzles do not cure a problem such as a rough or unstable arc, the swirl ring is a sensible next thing to inspect. Keep the threads and seating faces clean, because dirt there wears them over time.
