Fronius TPS 270i C Pulse FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing and using a compact pulse MIG welder in the 270 amp class.

What are the benefits compared with ordinary MIG?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Pulse welding gives less spatter, so there is less cleaning afterwards, better control of the weld pool, and lower heat input, which reduces distortion and burn-through on thin material. It is also easier to weld out of position.

It can also give a more attractive weld, which matters where appearance counts, such as on stainless fabrications.

Is pulse worth having for aluminium?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Yes, for most people it is the biggest benefit. Aluminium is soft, conducts heat fast and is easily distorted, and pulse gives a stable arc with controlled heat. It usually pairs with a push-pull or spool-gun torch to help feed the soft wire.

You will also need aluminium wire, the right drive rolls and liner, and argon-based shielding gas.

What does synergic control mean on a pulse machine?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Synergic means that when you choose the wire type, wire size and gas, the machine selects a matching pulse programme, and you adjust one main setting such as wire speed or power. The machine then adjusts the other parameters for you.

This makes pulse far easier to set up. You can still fine tune the arc length and other settings for the joint.

What do the letters and numbers in a machine's name mean?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Letters and numbers added to a machine's name often show which options are fitted, such as the type of control panel, the interface, the cooling arrangement or the torch connection. There is no common code, because each maker uses its own shorthand and it can change between versions.

For your own machine, check the data plate, the full product description and the manual to see exactly what is fitted. Do this before ordering torches, cables or other accessories, so that everything matches.
