    Mag Lenses FAQs

Answers to common questions about magnifying (cheater) lenses that fit inside a welding helmet.

How do I choose the right magnification strength?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Strength is measured in dioptres. A common rule of thumb is dioptres = 1 divided by your working distance in metres, so a working distance of half a metre points to roughly 2.0. The further you work from the weld, the lower the strength you need.

Reading glasses are a handy guide: try different strengths at your real working distance in good light, note the one that gives a clear view, and use that as a starting point. The rule is only an approximation because people's eyes differ, so testing is the more reliable check.

What is a magnifying (cheater) lens and how does it work in a welding helmet?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A magnifying lens, often called a cheater lens, is a small plate that mounts inside the helmet, usually beneath the clear cover lens in front of your eyes. It works like a pair of reading glasses: it brings the weld pool and joint into sharp focus at your normal working distance, so you do not have to lean in or squint.

It is a vision aid only. It does not replace the welding filter, which must stay in place at a shade suited to your process.

Can I use one strength for every welding process?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Not always. Fine, intricate work such as TIG usually benefits from a higher magnification, while MIG or stick welding often needs less, depending on how far your eyes are from the work. Your own working position matters more than the process name.

If you switch between very different jobs or distances, you may find you want more than one strength. Many welders keep a spare lens of a different power and swap as needed.

Will a magnifying lens correct my everyday prescription or astigmatism?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

No. A cheater lens only adds close-up magnification. It does not correct a distance prescription or astigmatism, and it cannot be matched to each eye separately.

If you wear glasses every day or have astigmatism, start with prescription safety glasses and speak to an optician. Some welders then add a modest magnifying lens for the finest close work.
