    Hypertherm Bulk Kits FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask when buying plasma torch consumables in multi-packs.

Which consumable parts wear out first?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

In most plasma torches the nozzle and electrode wear fastest, because they create and constrict the arc. A drop in cut quality is usually the first sign. The shield mainly protects and cools the other parts from molten spatter, and the swirl ring and retaining caps usually wear more slowly.

The order depends on the work, the number of pierces and the air quality, so keep notes of how long yours last. Check the swirl ring and caps for cracks, burns and blocked holes when you change the nozzle and electrode.

How do I know when a nozzle or electrode needs replacing?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Watch the cut. A sudden or marked decline, such as more dross, a slanted edge or hard starting, is the cue to inspect the parts. Replace a nozzle that has gouges or an orifice that is no longer round. Replace an electrode when the pit in its centre has reached the maker's depth limit, which varies with the current rating, so use the figure in your torch manual.

Do not run parts until they fail, as a worn electrode can damage the nozzle and the workpiece.

Should I change the electrode and nozzle together?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Yes, this is the usual advice. They wear together, and mismatched old and new parts tend to cut inconsistently. Maker guidance and trade guides say that when the electrode shows wear that needs replacing, the nozzle should be replaced with it.

Packs of the individual parts make this easy to do every time. Look at the shield and swirl ring when you change them. A shield can often be cleaned of spatter and reused, and should be replaced if it is physically damaged.

How should I handle consumables and fit them?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Wipe parts with a clean, lint-free cloth and use clean air to clear debris, especially from the retaining cap. If you wash parts, use clean tap water; never use water from a cutting table.

Some O-rings need a thin film of the lubricant the maker specifies, applied only if they look dry. Wipe off any excess, as too much can block gas flow. Fit parts in the correct order, tighten the electrode as the manual describes, and never refit worn parts.
