    Duramax Series FAQs

Questions buyers ask when choosing, fitting and looking after replacement consumables for this style of plasma cutting torch.

What are the consumable parts in a plasma torch and what does each one do?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A typical plasma torch consumable stack has an electrode, a nozzle, a swirl ring, a retaining cap and usually a shield. The electrode carries the current and wears with every arc start. The nozzle shapes and constricts the arc. The swirl ring spins the gas around the electrode, and the retaining cap holds the parts together.

The shield protects and cools the other parts, especially the nozzle, from molten spatter. Some torches combine several of these parts into a single cartridge, so check your torch manual for the exact layout.

Should I change the nozzle and electrode together?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Usually yes. The nozzle and electrode wear together and an old part can spoil the life and cut quality of a new one, so makers generally recommend changing them as a set.

A nozzle should be replaced when the orifice is nicked, out of round or has rounded edges, or when the cut becomes angled, rough or covered in dross. Look at the orifice in good light. If the hole is no longer a clean circle, replace it rather than trying to clean it up.

How is a shield different from an unshielded cap, and does it matter for drag cutting?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A shield sits at the front of the torch and protects the nozzle from molten spatter and double arcing. On hand torches, a shield also lets you rest the torch on the plate and drag it along the cut, which keeps the standoff consistent.

Unshielded parts need a controlled standoff and may give slower speeds, more dross and shorter nozzle life. On machine torches that sense the plate surface by electrical contact, a special conductive shield and retaining cap are usually needed, so check the maker's chart before ordering.

What is different about gouging consumables?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Gouging removes metal from the surface instead of cutting through it, for example to remove a weld or a defect. Gouging nozzles generally have a wider orifice that gives a wider, softer arc, and some torches use a dedicated gouging shield as well.

Gouging parts are made for a particular torch and current range, so use the parts the maker's chart lists for your torch, current and task. Do not fit gouging parts for through-cutting or the reverse, as cut quality will suffer.
