Anti-Spatter FAQs

Practical answers on where and how to use anti-spatter products, choosing between types, and getting clean results afterwards.

Where should I apply anti-spatter?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Apply it to the surfaces you want to keep free of spatter: the workpiece either side of the joint, jigs, clamps and fixtures, and the outside of the torch nozzle or shroud. One maker's data sheet lists workpieces, nozzles, shrouds, jigs and tools as suitable surfaces for its water-based product.

Keep it away from the contact tip bore and gas ports unless the torch maker says otherwise, as anything that blocks gas flow can cause weld faults. Apply it to cool surfaces before welding starts and let it settle or dry as the label directs.

Is it safe to spray anti-spatter on a hot torch or near an arc?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Not unless the maker says so. Many aerosol anti-spatter products contain flammable propellants or solvents, so spray them away from arcs, sparks and hot metal, and let the torch cool first. Even non-flammable types are best applied to a cool nozzle so the film lays evenly.

Use it in a ventilated place, keep aerosols away from heat and sources of ignition, and follow the warnings on the label and safety data sheet. If in any doubt, treat the product as flammable until the data sheet says otherwise.

Is a pump spray, aerosol or dip better for anti-spatter?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

It depends on the job. Aerosols are quick and convenient for occasional use and awkward spots. Pump sprays and bulk containers suit workshops that use a lot and want to refill a trigger or pump bottle. Gels and dips are generally used for torch nozzles and contact tips rather than large work areas.

Check that the product is made for your use, and remember that any container should be kept closed and stored as the label says. Our team can help you choose a type to suit the welding you do.

How do I remove spatter that has stuck despite using anti-spatter?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Anti-spatter makes spatter easier to remove but does not stop all of it. TWI notes that spatter can be removed by grinding, which is time-consuming, or quickly with a chipping hammer or spatter chisel without damaging the parent metal. Use eye protection and gloves, as loose spatter can fly off.

Spatter that sticks hard, or that appears in large amounts, is often a sign of the wrong settings rather than too little spray. Check wire feed speed, voltage, gas flow and the condition of the contact tip before blaming the product.
