    Hypertherm Accessories FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing accessories for a plasma cutting system.

Do I need a cutting guide, and which type should I choose?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A guide helps you keep a steady stand-off distance and follow a line, so the cut is straighter and the consumables last longer. Straight-edge guides, magnetic blocks, circle cutters and bevel or angle guides each help with a different task.

For occasional straight cuts, a simple guide is enough. If you cut circles or repeated shapes regularly, a circle cutter or angle guide pays off in consistency and speed.

What is an air filtration kit and why would I need one?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A filter kit sits on the air line close to the plasma cutter and removes moisture, oil and fine particles before they reach the torch. Wet or dirty air makes the arc unstable and shortens consumable life.

It is especially useful when the air comes from a long hose, an older compressor or a damp workshop. Check and drain it regularly and replace the element according to the maker's instructions.

Why use a dust cover or protective sheath?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Dust and grit get into vents and connectors on busy sites and workshops, and a cover helps keep them clean when the machine is not in use. A torch sheath protects the lead from abrasion, heat and cuts, which extends its life.

Covers should only be fitted when the unit is switched off, unplugged and cool. Never run the machine with a cover blocking the air vents.

Are wheel kits and carts worth having?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Heavier plasma units are awkward to lift, and a wheel kit or cart makes it easier to move them around a workshop or site and keeps the machine off a damp or dusty floor. They also give you somewhere to store the cables and torch.

Make sure the kit is made for your unit and is rated for its weight, and be careful on slopes and uneven ground.
