The weldcap® - an automatic welding cap that combines the comforts of a leisure hat with the advantages of a full welding helmet.

  • Shade level 3 / 9 to 12
  • 2.7 times the field of view of a standard industry welding helmet
  • Super light and super comfortable
  • Simply cool

Extensive Field of Vision - The heart of this innovative product is the optical unit featuring a well-defined nose cut out. Thereby, the visual unit is placed closer to the eyes, which enlarges the welder’s line of sight by 2.7 times! This increases the lateral and horizontal fields of vision and helps the welder’s performance and safety.

Minimal Weight - The Optrel weldcap® weighs only 400 grams, so it is lightweight. Since the ADF is closer to the eyes, the product's weight moves closer to its centre of gravity, increasing its stability and balance. The design eliminates pressure points and reduces strain on the welder’s neck.

Revolutionary Wear Comfort - The Optrel weldcap® is an auto-darkening welder’s cap that brings together the comfort of a casual cap and the advantages of a full welding helmet. The material combination of plastic and textile parts is unique. It is soft, where it must be comfortable, and rigid, where it must be tough.

Utmost Protection - The textile part is robust, easily detached and made of washable flame-retardant fabric. The Optrel weldcap® is completely hygienic and classified for EN 379 and EN 175 F.

Swift Handling - The Optrel weldcap® stands for swift handling. Its special shape makes it very easy to take on and off. It can easily be parked with the Optrel parking buddy. This also increases the productivity of the welder.

Multi-purpose Use - Darkening levels from 9 to 12 cover the majority of welding applications, and with a protection level 3 in its general mode, the welder has a bright and well-lit view of the workplace. This feature predestinates the Optrel weldcap® for grinding jobs.

Monkey Masks FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing and using a monkey mask or welding hood.

What is a monkey mask and who is it for?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A monkey mask is a flexible leather welding hood that covers your head and neck, with a window or lens at the front to see through. Because it is soft and compact rather than a rigid shell, it is popular with welders who work in cramped places, such as tanks, pipework, vessels and under machinery.

It also appeals to people who want good all-round cover of the head and neck against spatter and heat. Some versions have a fixed lens, some have flip-up goggles and some have an auto-darkening filter.

Why are monkey masks good for confined spaces?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

In tight spaces a bulky rigid helmet can knock against the walls or snag, and its shell can get in the way of your head position. A flexible leather hood has no hard edges to catch, so it slips in and out more easily and moves with your head.

It also covers the sides and back of the head and the neck, which helps against spatter dropping from above or bouncing around. Confined spaces have their own serious risks, especially fume and lack of fresh air, so never rely on the mask for those. Follow your safe system of work.

How is a monkey mask different from a normal welding helmet?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A conventional helmet is a rigid shell that protects the face and holds a filter lens, and it is usually lifted up and down. A monkey mask is a soft hood that also covers the back and sides of the head and neck. It is lighter and more flexible, but it usually gives less impact protection than a hard shell.

Many welders find a rigid helmet easier to lift out of the way, and a hood better for awkward positions and overhead work. The best choice depends on your work and how you move.

What viewing options do monkey masks have?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

There are generally three styles. A fixed lens gives a constant dark view, which means you lift the whole mask or look away to see between welds. Flip-up goggles or a flip-up lens let you raise the dark lens to see clearly for setting up or chipping. An auto-darkening filter is clear until the arc strikes, then darkens automatically, so you can position the torch and weld without lifting anything.

Choose according to how much you weld, how often you need to look at the work and your process. Whichever you choose, make sure the lens suits the process and current.
