230v MIG Welders FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most when choosing a MIG welder that runs from a normal single-phase supply.

Who are single-phase MIG welders for?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

They suit workshops, garages, farms, mobile engineers and light fabrication where a standard single-phase supply is all you have. Modern inverter designs draw relatively little current for their output, so many can run from a normal socket or a suitable dedicated circuit.

They are popular for both industrial and home use, and cover a wide range of work from thin sheet to moderate thickness.

What is the difference between an inverter and a conventional single-phase MIG welder?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

An inverter converts the supply electronically, which generally makes the machine lighter and smaller, and often gives finer control of the arc. A conventional (transformer) machine uses a heavy transformer, so it is bulkier, but it is simple and robust.

How much current each type draws for a given output varies between machines, so compare the input current and weight on the data plate and in the manual. For portability and a limited supply an inverter is often the better choice, while some people prefer a transformer design for rugged, simple workshop use.

Can I plug it into a normal socket?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Some smaller machines can, but many need a dedicated circuit with suitable protection, and some larger single-phase machines need a heavier supply than a normal domestic socket gives. Check the machine's input current and the supply and fuse or breaker rating it requires.

Have a qualified electrician check the supply if you are unsure. Running a machine beyond what the circuit can supply causes tripping and can be dangerous.

What is the maximum thickness a single-phase machine can weld?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

It depends on the machine's output and the process. Smaller machines suit thin sheet and light fabrication, while larger single-phase units cope with thicker plate, especially with good joint preparation and multiple passes.

Check the maker's stated capacity rather than relying only on the headline current, and remember that duty cycle limits how long you can weld at the top of the range.
