    ESAB Water Coolers FAQs

Straight answers to the questions buyers ask about welding torch water cooling units, how they are rated and how to look after them.

What does the cooling power figure on a water cooler mean?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Cooling power, given in watts or kilowatts, is how much heat the unit can remove from the coolant. It only means something alongside the conditions it was measured at, usually a stated coolant flow (often 1 litre per minute) and a stated air temperature, so two units can only be compared fairly when those match.

A small TIG unit is typically rated in the hundreds of watts, while units for higher-current MIG torches are rated around a kilowatt or more. Choose a unit whose rating suits the torch's current and duty cycle, and check the data plate and the welder and torch manuals rather than relying on the headline figure.

Can I use a TIG cooler on a MIG torch, or the other way round?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Only if the maker says it is suitable. Coolers are designed and rated for a particular job: some units are intended only for TIG torches, while others are intended for water-cooled MIG torches, which usually carry more current and need more cooling power.

The manual or data plate states what the unit is intended for and which welding machines it is compatible with. If your torch and machine are not listed, ask the maker or our team before buying rather than assuming it will work.

Where does the cooler get its power, and will it work with my welder?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Many welding coolers take their power and control signals from the welding machine through a cable, so the machine decides when the pump and fan run. Some units can also be run from their own mains supply with a switch.

Because of this, a cooler must be compatible with the specific welding machine: the connector, voltage and control signals all have to match. Check the compatibility list in the manual, and have the installation and any electrical connection done by a competent person with everything switched off and disconnected.

Where should I position the cooler?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Put it on a flat, stable surface that can take its weight, with the air inlets and outlets clear so the fan can move air through the radiator. Makers ask for free space around the unit, but the distance varies from model to model, so check the manual.

Keep it away from heavy dust, conductive dust, corrosive vapours and damp, because the fan pulls the surrounding air through the unit. Every unit also has an operating temperature range in its manual, and cooling gets harder as the surrounding air gets warmer.
