Hypertherm Consumable Kits

Hypertherm Consumable Kits FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask when choosing and using a plasma torch consumable kit.

What is in a plasma consumable kit and who is it for?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A kit gathers the wearing parts of a plasma torch into one box. On many torches the main consumables are the electrode, nozzle, swirl ring, retaining cap and shield, while some newer systems use a single-piece cartridge instead of a set of separate parts. The contents vary by torch and by kit type.

Kits suit anyone who wants a matched set for a particular torch, or who wants to refresh a torch that has been running on worn parts. Check the contents list against your torch's consumable chart.

Should I choose a handheld kit or a mechanised kit?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Choose by how the torch is used. Handheld kits are made for a torch held by the operator, and the shield is designed so that the torch can be dragged lightly on the plate. Mechanised kits are for a torch mounted on a cutting table or machine, which holds the torch a set distance above the plate.

Do not assume the two are interchangeable. Use only the parts your torch manual lists for your application, and check the consumable chart before mixing handheld and mechanised parts.

What does ohmic sensing mean, and do I need an ohmic kit?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Ohmic sensing is a way for a cutting machine to find the plate: an electrical contact between the torch and the plate tells the height control where the surface is before the arc fires. It is only relevant to mechanised cutting.

If your cutting table's height control uses ohmic sensing, the torch needs the contact ring or cap made for it, connected as the height control manual describes. If it does not, you do not need one. Handheld torches do not use this feature. Check your cutting table's manual first.

How do I make sure a kit fits my plasma torch?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Start with the torch and power source, not just the amperage. Consumables are specific to the cutting current, the material and the application, so confirm that the part numbers match those shown in your torch manual or consumable chart. Look at the data plate and manual for the torch model.

Consumables for one torch family do not normally interchange with another, even when they look alike. If you are unsure, our team can help you match a kit to your torch.

When should I replace the electrode and nozzle?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Replace them when cut quality drops or when inspection shows wear. For many separate-part torches the maker suggests changing a standard copper electrode at the pit depth given in the manual, and a nozzle whose hole is nicked, oval or has rounded edges. Systems differ, so use the figures in your own manual.

On systems that use a single-piece cartridge, replace the whole cartridge when the cut quality is no longer satisfactory or the nozzle hole is no longer round.

Why should the electrode and nozzle be changed together?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

They wear together and work as a pair. A new electrode in a worn nozzle, or the reverse, tends to give poor cut quality and can shorten the life of the new part. Makers and trade guides recommend changing the nozzle and electrode as a set.

A kit makes this easy, because it supplies several of each. At the same time, check the swirl ring holes are clear of dirt and lubricant, and look at the shield for a damaged hole or clogged vent holes, and replace what is worn.
