The CK 180L is an extended (114mm) neck torch ideal for applications where a longer reach is required. With compact consumable parts and no backcap, it can access tight areas where other torches cannot reach. The CK180L is a 180 amp water-cooled torch with a 100% duty cycle. It uses compact 8-series consumable parts.

Answers for buyers choosing and looking after compact and extended-neck water-cooled TIG torches in the 180 amp class.

When is a water-cooled TIG torch worth choosing over an air-cooled one?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Many makers put the point at which water cooling becomes worthwhile at around 200 amps, although some suggest a higher figure, so treat it as a rough guide rather than a rule. Water cooling matters most if you weld at high current for long arc-on times, because coolant carries heat away from the head and power cable, so the head can be smaller and lighter.

The trade-off is more equipment: you need a cooler, coolant and extra hoses, so the set-up is less portable than an air-cooled torch. Always check the torch's rated current and duty cycle on its data plate and in the manual, and remember the rating assumes the coolant is flowing as the maker specifies.

What is an extended-neck torch head for?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A longer neck lets the cup and tungsten reach into recessed joints, deep corners and areas behind obstructions where a standard head and handle would foul the work. It is mainly a reach and visibility solution for awkward joints.

The trade-off is that the handle sits further from the arc, so the torch can feel less balanced and needs a steadier hand. Pair it with the correct cup for the joint, check that gas coverage is still good at the end of the reach, and make a trial weld on scrap before committing to the real job.

What do compact consumables and a short back cap give me, and what do I give up?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

A short, button-style back cap and low-profile consumables shorten the overall head so it fits into small, low-clearance spaces. Makers note that short and medium back caps are used with tungsten electrodes cut down to a shorter length, whereas long back caps take a standard full-length electrode.

What you give up is gas coverage and convenience. Smaller cups generally give less shielding coverage than larger ones, so you may need to slow down, watch the heat input and check the weld for discolouration or porosity. Your torch manual will say which cups, collets and back caps fit your head size.

What coolant should I use in the cooler?icon-minus-redicon-plus-red

Use the coolant specified in the manual for your cooler and torch. Makers advise a specially treated torch coolant rather than plain tap water, because untreated water can lead to algae growth and scale inside the torch and cable. Treated coolants also protect the pump and head from corrosion and may give frost protection.

Do not assume that any antifreeze is suitable: some mixes can harm seals, block passages or affect the pump, so only use a product the cooler maker approves. Check the level regularly and change the coolant at the interval the maker gives.
